Why we skip mulch volcanoes

What’s the real reason pros leave a mulch-free ring around tree trunks (about 3 inches) rather than piling it up? After Saturday’s cleanup at Oak Hill Playground we flattened a few “volcanoes” for root health and clear sightlines; I’d love residents to test their trivia chops and tell me the safety benefit you think matters most.
